About this Program
Philosophy undertakes a critical examination of basic assumptions in the most significant areas of human life. It cuts across other disciplines and deals with such problems as the nature of reality, knowledge and values. It studies the development of ideas and their impact on the sciences, arts, religion and social institutions. The program in philosophy provides (1) general education courses; (2) electives and minors supporting concentrations in other fields, especially when valuation and methodological concerns in those fields are prominent in the student's interests; (3) majors both for those who want a very general liberal education (such as pre-professional preparation for law, theology, etc.).
