In the English Department, students come to a greater understanding of the crucial role of language in constructing meaning, building community, negotiating social, political, and economic benefits, and in clarifying and expressing personal and cultural values. Bachelor of Arts program emphases include creative writing, linguistics, literature and rhetorical and applied writing. Bachelor of Science (teaching) programs include Communication Arts/Literature and TESL (teaching English as a Second Language) . Program emphases at the graduate (MA and MS) level include college teaching, rhetoric and applied writing, a general emphasis, and an emphasis in TESL. English graduates move into careers in corporate communication, management, technical writing, training, and sales, as well as teaching at the secondary and post-secondary level. Many continue with graduate and professional study, including law school, business school, and doctoral studies.
