The exploration of language, literatures, cultures, and linguistics of Spanish in the US and in countries around the world where Spanish is spoken, prepares students for careers in a global environment. Students gain knowledge of language and culture that enables them to study, work, or travel in areas of the world where the target language is used. To facilitate these goals, the department sponsors a summer program in Mexico, Spain, Ecuador, and Costa Rica; Students who choose to take advantage of this program, or of other accredited study abroad experiences in Spanish speaking countries, may receive credit if departmental approval is obtained in advance. Study abroad meets the state-mandated requirements for first-hand experience with target cultures for the BS Teaching degree. Study abroad is highly recommended for all majors and minors.
