About this Program

The Early Childhood Education program prepares students to provide developmentally appropriate activities for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Coursework emphasizes child development, language activities, activity ideas, creating a positive environment, health in early childhood, foundations of early childhood, practices and assessments, methods and curriculum development, and special education.

The Special Education Certificate is designed for students in Early Childhood Education and Educational Assistant programs who wish to enhance their knowledge and employment opportunities serving Special Education students. It will also serve graduates and other Para-Educators and staff within the field of early childhood education expand their expertise in the area of Special Education. The courses will cover three primary areas: (1) ways to collaborate with licensed special education staff to serve those children already identified with special needs; (2) ways to recognize needs, behaviors and characteristics that indicate when to refer children for additional special needs assessments, and (3) addressing the needs of those children not qualifying for special education services but that have recognizable needs.
