After the first semester, increased emphasis is on hands-on-lab, clinical procedures, office machines, etc. Clinical time in physicians' offices is spent at the end of the second semester to give students a chance to put to use their newly acquired skills. The program is three semesters in length. The last six weeks of the program is an externship in an area physician's office or clinic. After graduation, a national test for certification can be taken allowing the student to become a certified medical assistant.
