The Phlebotomy program provides students the training necessary for employment and advancement in the healthcare field. The certificate provides up-to-date skills training through classroom and laboratory experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the classroom training at the college, each student is assigned to an affiliating clinical site for five credits of clinical experience. During this period, the student is under the direct supervision of a medical laboratory technician or technologist. Graduates of the one semester Phlebotomy program are eligible to take the board of certification examination of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Accepted students are required to have a physical examination. Information regarding Hepatitis B vaccination is also given to each accepted student prior to admission. Due to Minnesota legislative mandate, students are subjected to a criminal background check prior to placement in any clinical facility. Students found to have criminal backgrounds are ineligible to participate in clinical rotations and, thus, not eligible for graduation.
