MCTC's Barbering program helps you develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide hair, beard and skin-care services for a diverse clientele. You will be instructed in all skills related to barbering: contemporary haircutting and styling, shaving, facials, massage, chemical services, scalp treatments and hairpieces. To ensure your health and well-being and that of your customers, you will learn proper sanitation and hygiene practices, safety measures and first-aid techniques. You also will study anatomy, shop management, and business and professional ethics. Under the direction of an instructor with more than 25 years of experience, you will serve clients in the College barbering clinic. The clinic provides an opportunity to fine- tune your skills and serve diverse customers who have a variety of skin and hair types. To qualify to enter the Barbering program, you must have completed the 10th grade, and you must meet a reading requirement. To carry out tasks essential to the practice of barbering, you need to have good hand-eye coordination and be in sufficiently good physical condition to tolerate long periods of time spent standing. You will be required to purchase a smock, a barbering kit with clippers, shears, combs, hairdryer and supplies, as well as textbooks. Upon completion of the Barbering program, you will be prepared to take the Minnesota State Barber Board Apprentice Exam, which you must pass to practice as a barber.
