EDUC 2025 - Creating Culturally Responsive Classrooms (Partially Online) - 3 credits
This course is designed to prepare teacher/paraeducator students to work in culturally diverse classrooms. Students will investigate assumptions about culture, cultural backgrounds, how culture influences student motivation, and how culture impacts the learning setting. Students may have the opportunity to participate in field experience activities in K-12 schools. Prerequisite: Assessment score placement in RDNG 1000 or completion of RDNG 0900 or RDNG 0950 with a grade of C or higher.

EDU 1143 - Multicultural Education/Human Relations - 3 credits

Emphasizes the development of classroom teachers who are multiculturally informed, gender fair, and disability aware. Examines issues such as racism, sexism, oppression, prejudice and discrimination. The course aims to increase students' capacity to identify, discuss, and reflect on the ethical dimensions of political, social and personal life and to examine the responsibility of classroom teachers to practice productive citizenship. Emphasis is on demonstrating multicultural competence required of all successful teachers working with diverse youth. Designed to meet State of Minnesota human relations requirement for teacher licensure.

This course will aid you in developing a cohesive curriculum philosophy that reflects your beliefs and values and in assembling an extensive repertoire of instructional strategies, tools, and resources designed to foster increased student power, achievement, and equity in education for all students. You will examine research-based instructional strategies for successfully meeting the varying needs of students from ethnically, ability, culturally, socioeconomically and linguistically diverse groups. You will participate in nontraditional pedagogical models in order to evaluate differences in pedagogy and the effectiveness of successful cooperative learning. Must be taken A-F.

Study of interpersonal skills, motivation, and group skills. Applied to educational settings. Requires 18 hours clinical service learning experience (out of class). Meets State of Minnesota human relations requirement for teacher licensure.

This course is designed to help current and future educators acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become effective practitioners in culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse classrooms and schools. Students will examine current and emerging research, concepts, and debates about the education of students from both genders and from different cultural, racial, ethnic, and language groups. As part of the course requirement, this course requires at least 10 hours of experience (e.g., service learning hours, volunteer hours, etc.) in the K-12 setting outside of class meeting time.
